CHAPTER 33
MOVEMENT WITHOUT NOISE
Consequences never arrive as an explosion.
They arrive as a shift.
By half a degree.
By a second.
By one question not asked.
I returned without haste.
The first step is always to arrange the space.
Not the physical one.
The behavioural one.
I changed access.
Rhythms.
The order of conversations.
Not by deleting — by leaving.
A person’s attention is a resource.
If you do not feed it, it moves elsewhere on its own.
Jolanta stayed silent.
That meant she was thinking.
I wrote briefly:
I need you to take a pause. This has gone too far.
The word pause meant hope to her.
To me — time.
I wrote to Gunda more slowly.
At the weekend we’ll have a celebration at ours. Light, people, noise. If you want — come by. No serious conversations.
The offer was not about meeting.
It was about background.
People open up in places where they do not feel observed.
I felt the familiar reaction.
Not joy.
Not excitement.
A slight chemical lift that appears when complexity begins to yield to form.
Dopamine is not happiness.
It is confirmation of direction.
I did not run.
I did not hide.
I did not attack.
I simply shifted the centre of gravity.
Because hunting does not mean pursuit.
Hunting means an environment in which movement becomes predictable.
And predictability — controllable.
